2 Thessalonians 1:1–12

What does suffering say about where we stand with God?

As persecution and affliction increased, the Thessalonian church began to wonder whether their circumstances meant they had somehow missed God. Paul writes to correct their thinking and remind them of what is true: their suffering does not define their identity. Jesus does.

In 2 Thessalonians 1:1–12, Paul points a pressured church back to grace, celebrates a faith and love that are flourishing in hardship, and reminds them that the Day of the Lord will bring both perfect justice and glorious salvation. Their response is not to check out while waiting for Jesus, but to persevere, pursue holiness, share the gospel, and live lives worthy of the calling they have received.

When life gets harder, the answer is not less faithfulness. Rooted in grace and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we keep trusting, keep loving, and keep working for the glory of Jesus until He comes.
